2024 IWA MTSG Rising Star Award
Background and Purpose
The IWA Membrane Technology Specialist Group (MTSG) Rising Star Award recognizes and celebrates the exceptional contributions of early-career researchers in the field of membranebased water treatment. This award focuses on individuals who have demonstrated leadership, innovation and promise in advancing research that contributes significantly to the sustainable water treatment by membrane technology. Nominations for the 2024 IWA MTSG Rising Star Award are currently open. Following an evaluation by a panel of experts, the winner will be announced and receive the award at 7th IWA Regional Membrane Technology Conference in Palermo (Italy).
Eligibility
The award is open to global early-career researchers under the age of 40, with less than 10 years of post-Ph.D. research experience on membrane-based water treatment. Researchers should be affiliated with academic institutions, research organizations or industries. Nominated candidates must be members of IWA (Researchers in low- and middle-income countries are highly encouraged).
Process of Nomination and Selection
1. Qualified Nominators
The right to submit a nomination for the IWA MTSG Rising Star Award is granted to Members of IWA Membrane Technology Specialist Group (MTSG).
Important: self-nominations will not be accepted.
2. Materials required for Nomination
To complete the nomination process, the Nominator is required to provide the following materials:
• The Nomination Form (provided below).
• Biography of the Nominee (a CV/Resume, not exceeding 5 pages, summarizing
educational and professional qualifications and experiences), to be supplied by the
Nominee to the Nominator.
• Two supporting letters from IWA MTSG members.
Important: All materials should be submitted together by the Nominator to the IWA MTSG Selection Committee (Email: iwa-mtmc@hotmail.com).
3. Award Criteria
• Research Impact: Evidence of impactful research contributions to membrane-based water treatment, such as publications, patents or novel technologies.
• Innovation: Demonstrated innovation in research methodologies, approaches or the application of membrane technologies.
• Collaboration: Successful collaboration with peers, organizations or industry partners in advancing the membrane technology.
The Awarding Process
The IWA MTSG is responsible for the selection of the awardees. The MTSG Chairs and Secretariat will advertise the beginning of the award process and receive nominations. MTSG will also appoint a jury consisting of nine voting members who will evaluate the received nominations. After the judging process, the jury will present a proposal for final candidates to the Management Committee (MC) of the IWA MTSG. The MC will audit the nomination and judging process and then endorse the winner.

2024 IWA MTSG Doctoral Thesis Award
Background and Purpose
The IWA Membrane Technology Specialist Group Committee established the MTSG Doctoral Thesis Award in 2024. The MTSG Doctoral Thesis Award aims to recognise the contribution and dedication of recent PhD graduates to the field of membrane technology and to encourage the next generation of quality MTSG members.
The Award
The Award will include:
• A citation delivered at either the IWA Membrane Technology conference or IWA
MTSG regional conference#.
• Prize award equivalent to the registration fee to attend the event where the award will
be conferred.
Eligibility Criteria
• The candidate must be a PhD awarded within the most recent 2 years since the
nomination closing date.
• The award recipient must be a member of the IWA MTSG.
• The thesis can be written in any languages but must result in at least one journal
publication in English
Judging Criteria
Applicants are required to submit a summary of their thesis of up to 1000 words. The following criteria will be used to assess applications for this award:
1. How does the thesis advance knowledge of membrane technology for water
applications by making a contribution to theoretical, empirical, and/or methodological
research and understanding?
2. How does the thesis contribute or potentially contribute to practical use of membrane
technology for water applications? Explain the nature of the contribution.
3. How does the thesis demonstrate or evidence excellence in membrane technology and
water research?
4. How will this award potentially impact on career development of the candidate?
Process for reviewing applications
Applications are confidential and will remain confidential throughout the reviewing process. Applicants should complete the application form and submit their applications to IWA MTSG Selection Committee (Email: iwa-mtmc@hotmail.com) by 31 March 2024.

The Selection Committee will consist of members of the IWA MTSG managing committee members. The Selection Committee will assess applications in the following steps:
Step 1 – establishing that applications meet the criteria for eligibility
Step 2 – assessing each eligible application against the selection criteria
Step 3 – selecting candidates to receive the award
Step 4 – approval by the selection committee
The Selection Committee may request a copy of the full thesis and any supporting documentation and/or additional information to assist in decision making. If the Selection Committee decides there are no nominations for the Award that sufficiently fit the selection criteria, no award will be presented. The decision is final and there will not be any appeal process.

l The Award will be announced at the IWA Membrane Technology conference or IWA MTSG regional conference and the award recipient invited to write a short article for the newsletter about the thesis for inclusion in the IWA MTSG newsletter.
l The Award recipient will receive a registration waiver (or prize ward equivalent to the registration fee) to attend the IWA Membrane Technology conference or IWA MTSG regional conference and receive the award.

2024 Global Project Excellence Award on Membrane-based Water
Treatment Background and Purpose
The global project excellence award on membrane-based water treatment acknowledges bestin-class programs that demonstrate excellence, innovation and leadership in the application of membrane-based technologies for water treatment. With a focus on advancing clean water accessibility and quality, these awards celebrate membrane-related projects that have showcased significant impact in the water treatment field (Projects in low- and middle-income countries are highly encouraged). Applications for the 2024 global project excellence award on membrane-based water treatment are currently open. Following an evaluation by a panel of experts, the winners will be announced and receive their awards at the 7th IWA Regional Membrane Technology Conference in Palermo (Italy).
Eligibility
The awards are open to membrane-based water treatment projects worldwide. Projects must be completed with Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7 or above (Annex 1) within the last ten years, with a preference for those completed within the last five years. These projects should showcase effectiveness, sustainability and positive impacts on water treatment by membrane technology.
Process of Application and Selection
1. Qualified Applicants
The right to submit an application for the Global Project Excellence Award on Membrane based Water Treatment is granted to Members of IWA Membrane Technology Specialist Group (MTSG).
Important: The applicant(s) must be the major contributor(s) to the key technological innovation of the project.
2. Materials required for Application

• Up to five high quality images of the project. These images will be displayed on the IWA MTSG Awards webpage if the project wins the award.
• Up to three supporting documents highlighting the key aspects of the project. This could include planning documents, press releases, presentations, publications, patents, third party reports or any other materials that would assist the jury to assess the project.
• Up to three links to relevant websites, social media platforms or other online resources.
• A minimum of two testimonial letters endorsing and validating the impact and success of the project, which can be provided by project stakeholders, partners, beneficiaries, clients, or any other relevant individuals or entities associated with the project.

The Global Project Excellence Award on Membrane-based Water Treatment is in recognition of an outstanding innovation or contribution to science or practice which has led to demonstrable uptake/impact/influence at national, regional or international levels. • Innovation: Uniqueness and innovation in the application of membrane-based water treatment technologies.
• Performance: Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving water treatment goals, such as
water quality improvement, cost reduction and carbon emission reduction.

and implementation.
• Collaboration: Successful collaboration with stakeholders, local communities or other
organizations.
