SUEZ Awarded the Largest Single Sludge Incineration Facility in Southwest China
On 27 September, SUEZ was awarded a contract to supply a Thermylis® sludge incinerator for Phase III of Chengdu No. 1 Municipal Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Plant. SUEZ technology will provide reliable and safe disposal of sludge for downtown Chengdu, help the city achieve its ecological and environmental goals under the 14th Five-Year Plan, and continuously improve the local capacity for ecological and environmental management.
Located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Chengdu is the fourth city in China with a residential population of more than 20 million, after Chongqing, Shanghai, and Beijing. The city plays a pivotal role in the protection of the Yangtze River basin’s ecological environment. In Chengdu, every day millions of tonnes of municipal wastewater are treated, generating approximately 2,200 tonnes of sludge, of which, 600 tonnes are already treated by Phase I and Phase II facilities of the Chengdu Plant. To ensure appropriate treatment of the growing amounts of sludge, the wastewater and sludge treatment plant is undergoing a Phase III expansion that will add another 800 tonnes/day in sludge treatment capacity.
This additional load will be treated by the Thermylis® incinerator, suited to treat the low calorific value sludge in China. The plant is set to become the largest single sludge incineration facility of its kind in southwest China. This process has been successfully applied in more than 40 high-temperature fluidized bed sludge incineration plants worldwide. It stabilizes, reduces, and disposes of sludge harmlessly, and also recovers steam generated from sludge incineration and reuses it in the pre-drying system to maximize energy recovery and reduce energy consumption, helping customer to reduce its carbon footprint and save on operating costs. The treatment system will reduce the plant’s environmental impact through clean production and ultra-clean emission technology, save landfill space, and effectively prevent secondary pollution from sludge.
In China, SUEZ has been providing sludge digestion, drying and incineration solutions and has built and operates five sludge treatment plants in Chongqing, Suzhou Industrial Park and Xiangcheng District, Yangzhou and Shanghai. Among them, the sludge disposal and waste-to-energy project in the Suzhou Industrial Park has achieved national and international recognition for its environmentally beneficial design. The project received the Climate Change Solutions Innovation Award from the France-China Committee, as well as recognition as one of the “replicable case studies of third-party environmental treatment in industrial parks” in China and a Jiangsu Province Circular Economy Demonstration Project.
Steve Clark, CEO of SUEZ Asia, said, “SUEZ has maintained a decade-long partnership with the city of Chengdu. Together, we have witnessed and contributed to the continuous improvement of the city’s ecology and environment. Today, we are deeply encouraged by the trust placed in us by our customer to provide services for such a large sludge disposal project in Chengdu. This highlights SUEZ’s ability to provide access to water services with resilient and innovative solutions. ”
